5 Ways to handle uncertainty
With an incoming U.S. President known to be unpredictable, uncertainty looms over many of us. And while we often take pleasure in the thrills of not knowing something, I cannot help but ponder this odd paradox of how we feel towards the unknown.
When we get too comfortable with an environment, we often crave for adventure and itch to go outside of our comfort zones for novelty.
Yet when we are swimming in deep oceans of unknowns, we become desperate to find comfort in any way possible so that we can appease the lingering fear and anxiety of not knowing.
So how can we find comfort in the midst of obscurity?
How can we face the wavering future with optimism?
And how can we walk down an un-walked path with confidence?
1. Expect the unexpected
What are all of the possible outcomes?
Think of as many of them as possible, and then think of how you would respond to each situation. This way, you will feel more mentally prepared and ready to react calmly and mindfully to whatever may end up your way.
2. Concentrate on the controllable
Be the change you wish to see.
We are simply unable to dictate everything that happens in life. So rather than spending time worrying about things outside of your control, take comfort in knowing that you can still use your voice and choices in powerful ways that align with your beliefs and values.
3. Build a strong network of support
You are not alone.
Get out there and find people who feel the same way you do. Sometimes, all we need is to simply know that somebody is there for us, whether or not he or she may have the chill pills to our woes.
So nourish your relationships, spend more time with loved ones, and allow the simple joys of having company to keep you feeling safe and grounded.
4. Focus on the here and now
What do you know?
Sometimes, the unknowns do not influence us any bit; yet sometimes, they may make us feel threatened or even helpless.
No matter, practicing mindfulness and being present can help take our minds off of what we don't know so that we can savor, appreciate, and experience more of what is happening around us right here, right now--a familiar place and a time where we have the opportunity and power to know.
5. Look on the bright side
What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.
Many of us are scared of the unknown simply because we fear unpleasant outcomes turning into reality.
But we often reflect the most during our weak moments; we often learn the most through challenges; and we often grow the most working through hardships.
